The Loropetalum chinense, or Chinese Fringe-flower, native to SE Asia, is a medium- to fast-growing woody ornamental flowering shrub/small tree. Extremely heat tolerant, it thrives in southern US landscapes. Most varieties grow between 6’ to 10’ high, with roughly the same spread. As a member of the Witch Hazel family, loropetalum has a long history of use for a variety of medicinal purposes.
Thanks to its ease of care, tolerance of sun and heat, as well as its dramatic appearance, interest in loropetalum has increased over the last 10 to 20 years. Breeding programs in the USA and China have generated mature plant sizes ranging from 3 to 15 feet in height and spread, as well as a wide range of bark characteristics, flower color and foliage colorations. The Glowing Horizons® series loropetalum selections present the most striking and vivid appearance possible.
